Waste Pickup Time: starts at 6:00 a.m.; your cart must be on the terrace by that time. A return trip will not be made for those carts that aren’t out on time. Remove your cart from the terrace after pickup. For service requests or complaints call the City of Muskegon Department of Public Works at 231-724-4100.
Garbage services will be delayed by one day after the following holidays:
- New Year’s Day
- Memorial Day
- 4th of July
- Labor Day
Christmas tree pick up is scheduled through January 30.
Mixed Refuse Stickers are $2.00 each or six (6) for $10. They are required for household furniture and any extra garbage that will not fit in your cart. All extra waste must have a refuse sticker attached to each article or it will not be picked up. Only Six (6) stickers may be used at one time per residential pickup. These can be purchased at the Muskegon City Hall – 933 Terrace, or at the Dept of Public Works at 1350 E Keating Ave.
Due to the recent resurgence of bed bugs, the garbage company is using ‘universal precautions’ to prevent spreading them further and to protect their workers from being infected. The attachment below gives additional information.
In addition to needing a pink sticker, each mattress and/or box spring is required to be sealed in plastic. A less expensive (and acceptable) method is to wrap a plastic paint drop cloth around the mattress and seal the ends with duct tape.

Appliance Stickers are $25.00 for appliances such as stoves, refrigerators, freezers, dishwashers, water heaters, washers, and dryers. The doors must be removed from all appliances with airtight doors or locks.
Stickers are available at the City Hall’s Treasurer Department located at 933 Terrace or the Department of Public Works at 1350 E. Keating Avenue.
Garbage Cart Info. Administration fee for garbage service or to replace a lost/stolen garbage cart is $55.00.

Each residential unit is authorized for one (1) garbage cart. Additional carts can be obtained for $13.00 per month per cart; the charge will appear on the water bill. The unauthorized use of City of Muskegon carts is not allowed. Violators will be charged $35 per incident.
Small business and churches may obtain garbage service for $16.00 per month, per cart.
Hardship Stickers are available to residents that are physically unable to use a garbage cart. Contact 724-4100 for details.
Yard Waste will be picked up curbside on your garbage day from the first week of April through November 30th, weather permitting. Yard waste must be in paper yard waste bags, cardboard boxes, or rigid 35-gallons (or less) garbage cans. The can will be emptied and returned to the terrace. Brush must be 4ft or less in length and 4 inches or less in diameter. It must be containerized as stated above or tied in bundles weighing 35lbs or less. Absolutely no plastic bags are allowed! Large volumes of yard waste can be disposed of for a fee; contact Public Works at 724-4100 for details. Paper yard waste bags can be purchased at local retail stores. Please set the yard waste container(s) at least three feet away from your garbage can.
