Holiday Safety Tips from the Police Department

muskegon-police-badgeThe Muskegon Police Department would like to remind our residents and visitors of some things they can do to increase safety for themselves and their homes not only this holiday season but year round.

Take time to be aware of your surroundings especially at night when going to and from parking lots and retail stores. Try to avoid parking in dark areas of the lot. Make sure to keep an eye on your purse while you are shopping, and report any thefts or loss of your purse, wallet, and or identification, credit cards, bank cards, etc. immediately!

Make sure to remove valuables from your vehicle and keep it locked up whether at home or just out doing things. If you have purchases or valuables you must leave in your vehicle, lock them in the trunk or cover them up so they are not readily visible.

Leave your outdoor lights on and make sure all doors and windows are locked when you are going away. You should keep doors locked even when home, and be careful to check and see who is at your door before opening it.

And last but not least, be aware of scams by mail, e-mail, or phone. If you receive a request for money or other information by mail, e-mail, or phone then we suggest you look up the phone number and call the organization directly to make sure it is legitimate. Remember, you should never give out any personal information by phone, mail, or e-mail unless you are the one that initiated the contact with the person or organization.

We wish you safe and Happy Holidays!
