Residential Garbage Pickup and Recycling


Below is the residential garbage pickup and recycling information for the City of Muskegon

Waste pickup time starts at 6:00 a.m.; have your cart and recycling bin on the terrace by that time. (A return trip will not be made for those carts/bins that aren’t out on time.) Remove your cart/bin from the terrace after pickup. For service requests or complaints, call the City of Muskegon Department of Public Works at 724-4100 or Ted Russell, Resource Recovery Coordinator, at 724-6908. Garbage services will be delayed by one day after the following holidays:

  • New Years Day
  • Memorial Day
  • 4th of July
  • Labor Day
  • Thanksgiving
  • Christmas

If any of the above listed holidays is on a weekend, the garbage will be picked up on your regularly scheduled day.

Christmas tree pick up is scheduled from January 2 through January 23, 2009.

Mixed Refuse Stickers are $2.00 each. They are required for any extra garbage that will not fit in your cart. All extra waste must have a refuse sticker attached to each article or it will not be picked up.

Appliance Stickers are $25.00 for appliances such as stoves, refrigerators, freezers, dishwashers, water heaters, washers, and dryers. The doors must be removed from all appliances with airtight doors or locks. Stickers are available at the City Hall’s Treasurer Department located at 933 Terrace or the Department of Public Works at 1350 E. Keating Avenue.

Garbage Cart Info.

  • Second 64-gal cart — $12.00 per month,
  • Small business and churches– $15.00 per month per cart for service + $55.00 for each cart issued (one-time charge)
  • Replace lost/stolen garbage cart – $55.00
  • Start up fee for garbage service is- $55.00.

Place cart at the curb with handle facing the house.

Unauthorized usage of City of Muskegon carts is not allowed. Violators will be charged $30 per incident.

Hardship Stickers are available to residents that are physically unable to use a garbage cart. Contact Ted Russell at 724-6908 for details.

Yard Waste will be picked up curbside on your garbage day from April 6 through December 4, 2009. Yard waste will only be picked up if it is in paper yard waste bags, cardboard boxes, or rigid 35-gallons (or less) garbage cans. The can will be emptied and returned to the terrace. Absolutely no plastic bags are allowed!

To dispose of large volumes of yard waste for a fee, contact Public Works at 724-4100 or Ted Russell at 724-6908. Paper yard waste bags can be purchased at the Department of Public Works ($2 for a five pack) or local retail stores. Please set the yard waste container(s) three (3) feet to the left of your garbage can.

Recyclables can be dropped off at 1970 Port City Blvd. The site is open Monday through Firday between 7:00 am and 3:45 p.m.
