Today's Cool Muskegon Fact
In 1925, 48-year old Muskegon Police Detective Charles Hammond lost his life while bringing down the country's Public Enemy Number One George “Dutch” Anderson in an alley in downtown Muskegon. Anderson had been born to Danish nobility and graduated from the University of Uppsala and Heidelberg studying music, literature and several languages before emigrating to the United States around the turn of the century. But by 1907, he had turned to a life of crime and over the next 18 years became notorious for crimes including burglary, bootlegging, robbery, prison escape, counterfeiting, and murder. On October 31, 1925, Detective Hammond stopped Dutch for passing counterfeit money and, as they were heading to the police station, Dutch tried to run. During the chase and re-apprehension, the two mortally shot each other.
