Why do we have roads like 3′rd world countries? It’s embarrassing! Don’t tell me the city or county doesn’t have the money! The City of Muskegon is a joke and the sooner I get out of here, the better. Of all the places I’ve lived in Michigan, Muskegon is the wart on the hand…the snag in the mitten…the other mistake by the lake.

Can property owners have garage sales on thier property within city limits? is there an application process for having a garage sale?

I would like to know which beaches along the shoreline between Muskegon and the Whitelake area are open to dogs. I have no problem picking up after my dog, but would like to take him off the leash when he goes in the water

I see the site has the 2011 Estimated Tax Vouchers available in PDF. It would be a great help to be able to fill in the form fields before printing them. Thanks.

I keep fish that naturally occur in South American rivers, so they are used to a non-local water chemistry. For example, I have tested my tank and found higher than usual ph levels and ammonia for typical tap water, though neither at levels that humans would have to worry about. I found one water quality report, from 2009, which showed the water to be very good here, but ph and ammonia levels were not listed.

Do you know where i can find detailed information about Muskegon’s tap water?

    Thanks, Mike

      Tamara,

Please call the City Treasurer’s Office at (231) 724-6720, they can help you get signed into your account.

Wow that was easy. I just paid my W/S bill online for the first time and can’t believe what a snap it was. I’m comparing it to one of the large utility companies bills that I also tried to pay online.

The OTHER guys wanted a boat load of information and I still couldn’t get it right. I finally gave up with them. Kudos to the genius that designed your quick and very easy payment site!

Can I send my W-2 forms electronically with my MW-3 form or do I have to mail hard copies?

  10. Jason says:

I am so sick and tired of the snow plows pushing snow BACK into my driveway. Last night I spent an hour clearing the end of my driveway, only to wake up this morning to find a mound of snow that is hard, thick and clumpy, back where I had removed it. I have dealt with that crap all winter, and now I’m sick of it. I can’t afford to hire people to plow the end of my driveway.

    • Tonya Woodring says:

Well i just looked out side and the plow drove right by and hit our mail box!!! 2md one in two years!!!!!!!! No reason for that…..They have been doing this long enough they should know where the mail boxes are…

  11. Robert says:

    1. Who do you contact when your trash isn’t picked up. Our container has been sitting in the normal location pickup for days now and there is no room to put this weeks trash in it. It is normally picked up on Tuesday morning.I can’t find any contact information for this on the bill or this website.

    2. Why to the snowplows cut a path down our road too narrow for mail to be delivered. My wife and I are disabled and can not shovel the several hundered pounds of snow required to make our mailbox accessible. Being on fixed incom, we don’t have the resources to hire someone for the job.

    3. The second point is also a “when” they decide to plow. Our short, one block road was so full of snow for several days, if you didn’t have 4 wheel drive it was difficult/near impossible to get to a main road, even in a 3/4ton, 2WD pickup.

    4. It also seems (I know this is perceptual, we are not the only road to be plowed) they have someone watching and wait for the plows to come through until all the driveways are cleared, only then they come through so they can bury the ends so people have to do it all over again. Our neihbor waited for several days before clearing the end of his driveway and when he finally did clear it to get out, he had just put the snowblower away when the plows finally came through and buried him in again. His was the last drive on this road to be cleared and I could just about hear him swearing about it.

If they had taken the 5 minutes the day the snow first fell instead of days later, all of us would have only had to do this once for that snowfall.

Just what are we paying taxes and water and sewer for again?

    Robert

This is IT issue. I was hoping you could revise this website to make it easier to find contact phone numbers for the government offices. It’s a challenge to find the numbers.

I am seeking some historical information. I have found 2 or more pictures of my father in a uniform of sorts and on the back is written “245 S. Muskegon Ave., Muskegon, Mich.” I assume this time period is the late 1920s and also assumed for sometime, that this picture was taken in Yellowstone, Montana, since he had driven a tour bus there in the summers while in college and/or in Medical school.

Do you know what was located at 245 S. Muskegon Avenue in the 1920s? Is there an Historical Society or Genealogical Society in Muskegon that I can contact? Any assitance you can provide would be very much appreciated. I would be happy to send the pictures. Thank you, Helen H. Smith

  17. Jackie says:

Am I the only frustrated homeowner complying with city ordinances while your neighbors refuse? Our yard/alley are always debris free and vehicles parked where they are allowed. Our neighbors have been told several times by police, they are not allowed to park on their front lawn. Yet they continue. On Monday, 11/1/2010 I witnessed a police officer tell another neighbor he had to “move” his vehicle asap from blocking the alley, and yet looked beyond the next neighbor, still parking “on their front lawn”! Another neighbor on Fountain appears to have a junk shop in his drive and side lawn. There are usually so many ill equiped vehicles/boats/travel trailers parked there that entry to the driveway is impossible, and at times passing on the street is tight. If our ordinances were inforced, our city would be alot cleaner, safer, nicer place to call home. If we try to promote tourism to our wonderful city, you would think a “clean” city would in itself, invite people to return.

No response necessary please when you’re “playing politics” again! But just wanted to let you know that my group of 10 planned (1/2 adults, 1/2 teenagers) dinner at MAC’s downtown then off to the dangerous ‘haunted ship.’ for some clean family fun with no no alcohol involved. While we always enjoy a Halloween event every year and were so excited about this in our own hometown, we are not canceling our fun, just because you tried to cancel it for us. We are now going to GR for dinner then going to “The Haunt” off Walker in GR. Yes, it’s farther away, yes it’s more expensive, but yes, we still wanted to have some clean family fun!

I can’t find any information about how this was resolved…

    http://www.woodtv.com/dpp/news/local/muskegon_county/Probation-chief-on-leave-officer-fired

I believe they were accused of stealing 1/2 million dollars from the city…where did that money go…this was in January last year. Who was guilty…and where did the money go?

  24. Crystal Hibbs says:

I put my trash can out at 6:30 this morning, around noonish, the trash truck totally passed me up and got the neighbors trash and not mine… So now what? I just have to wait until next week and have extra trash and have to be penalized by buying trash stickers for something that was no fault of mine? I would appreciate it if the trash trucks would pay a little more attention and not skip houses… I am not the only one in my neighborhood that this has happened to.

I am having trouble with your Forestry Dept. regarding a dead tree on out terrace. I have been waiting for months to have a totally dead tree taken care of and there seems to be no response on the City’s behalf.
The tree is literally falling apart and school kids are walking under this tree eveyday. Also,if you can’t get this problem taken care of before he snow season, don’t be expecting me to clear the snow from the sidewalk because it will get jammed up in the snowblower and I am sure you are not going to be willing to pay for repairs.

  26. Crystal Wynia says:

Dear Mr Mayor & Inspectors and Members of the City Police Department,

I am a new resident in Muskegon. I received a “nastygram” and responded immediately to your requests, but none of you have responded to mine, except John in inspections, who told me that it was not his department & told me who to contact. I called the police Dept, and spoke with Shannon. I called the inspection Dept. and I wrote an opinion in the Chronicle when I got nothing done.

I live on Dowd St and it was requested that I clean up the alley behind my house…done. I called each of your offices and have gotten NOWHERE. I wrote to the Chronicle, article published immediately, still NOTHING! I am extremely frustrated and am requesting one last time that someething be done about my neighbors, who have a carport FULL of trash etc, 4 junk cars in the back yard and a few other neighbors, with untagged junk cars. Why do I have to comply with city regulations, if they do not?

I see at least 3 city trucks per day go down my street, but none stop to address the problem. I also realize that the police have better things to do than ticket junk cars, but something NEEDS to be done!!!!

Please ladies & gentlemen of my city, help me end this problem. I will expect an immedaite response or I will be contacting agencies and officals NON Stop as well as contacting the media etc, to get something done.

    UNHAPPY on Dowd St

Is it illegal to put someone’s creamated remains in Lake Michigan? If so, is there any way of getting a special permit to do it? My mother requested before she died to have her ashes put in a body of water, and I’d very much like to do it in Lake Michigan since she spent so much of her life near it. Thank you for any information you can give.

    • Mike says:

      Becky,

I would suggest contacting a local funeral home, they would probably be able to tell you what specific rules apply.

      Thank you.

I can’t seem to find any informaion on here, but just wondering how friendly city parks are for dogs – I know the beach has a specified area, but what about Hackley Park for example?

  30. Teresa D says:

I have a large blue spruce in my front yard and are planning on cutting it down this year. Last year I recall seeing an ad in the paper for a donated tree i believe was for hackley park, do you know who this was? Any one interested in a donated outdoor tree, please contact me. YOU CUT. Would rather see it go for a good cause, then to just go to the dump.

I missed the art fair due to having to be out of town. You have a vendor that is there every year that sells beautiful tie dyed dresses. She has a web site but I need her name in order to send her email about buying a new tie dyed dress. Could you give me that information PLEASE!!!!!

    • Alan says:

You might be referring to the Artisans weekend of Muskegon Summer Celebration. If you, then there are 2 distinct areas where you are liklely thinking of. The Art in the Park or the Village Craft Market. There is usually a tye dye vendor that is part of the Village Craft market on the corner of 4th and Clay.

How about a PDF download or summary page by month with things to do in the area? Your calendar of events only includes city console planning events. What about people visiting your city what are things for them to do? Thanks,

Great – thank you for fixing the spelling (officials) – easy typo but I hate to see it on a page like this:)

  40. Anita Rooney says:

Gentlemen: I suggest you do something to improve your web site. It’s truly lacking in information that might be interesting to travelers. We plan to travel up the coast and needed to inquire about things to do or see in Muskegon. There is absolutely nothing on the web site to show anything of interest except some history of improvements, etc, and this certainly wouldn’t merit a day in your city. It appears that you think Muskegon is totally boring. Surely in a city of this size there is someone who can design a web site with pictures and info which is interesting enough to make Muskegon seem at least minimally attractive. I clicked on “Events,” and even there nothing at all came up. If you care about your city, it would be wise to “get with it.”

    • Lea says:

I would hope you have a direct link to the Muskegon convention and visitor’s bureau, as this is the best place to get all the local info!!

  41. Vicki Moran says:

Why put comments on this web site if they don’t get answered?? I asked back on 6-1-10 about the cemeteries and still no response??!!!

  42. Risk says:

    Mike,
Can I purchase a boat launch permit online? Or are snail mail and/or in person the only choices? Also wondering, does the term “resident” mean Michigan resident or Muskegon city resident when it comes to the 10 dollar price difference?
    Thanks!

    • Mike says:

Right now they can only be purchases in person or snail mail, we hope to have an online option in the near future. The resident term applies to City of Muskegon resident.

  43. Mallory says:

Who says pit bulls are dangerous? I have two and they absolutely do not need to be muzzled. Is Muskegon not the place for us to come visit because that sounds awfully ridiculous. Why don’t you say Rotweilers or Doberman pinchers? If my dogs is not “dangerous” then can they not be muzzled? Wow, that makes me kind of upset and want to talk to someone higher in the city of Muskegon. What the…..

    • Mike says:

Mallory, this is in accordance with City ordinance Sec 6-15 (1). You can view the City ordinance on this page.

      • Tim Updyke says:

I own a Doberman and have been to the beach several times with her. She does not need to be muzzled because she is not a dangerous dogs. Most Pitbulls are not either. If your dog is friendly you will not have a problem. In Muskegon the Pitbulls have a bad reputation because of the people breeding/fighting them.

  44. Ronnie says:

Was down to Bronson Beach this weekend and was appalled by the amount of garbage on the beach. Since there are no garbage containers on the beach anymore, people have opted to just leave their garbage. I realize that we have a budget problem and that the city is finding ways to save money; however, we are giving up our beautiful beaches to trash in order to save money.

I read a post above where someone volunteered to monitor the beach situation. I think that is a wonderful idea. Why not have teenage volunteers to monitor the beach situation, pick up trash, life guards, etc. in exchange for possible college credits at MCC, scholarships or something along those lines … sort of a barter system. It would put teenagers to work, help out our beautiful shoreline and save the taxpayers money.

I will bring a garbage bag with me to the beach from now on and do my part to help preserve our most precious commodity. Thanks!

    • Deb McKeown says:

I agree with Ronnie….we need some more garbage containers out …I walk around the channel between Muskegon Lake & Lake Michigan and haven’t bothered to pick up the trash I see because there are no containers out at this time to put the trash in……maybe we could use some of the money the street sweeper in the Laketon/Henry/Seaway Dr. area is being paid, to get garbage containers out earlier, for people to help keep our city cleaner.
It would be great if everyone was a good citizen like Ronnie and helped to keep our city looking clean.

  45. Navi Cortez says:

I am just letting you know that when the garbage man picks up our trash he leaves the cans in the street and knocked over where someone could run over them. They also spilled out the trash across the street and left it on the ground. An old lady lives there. Please, if someone could address this, I would appreciate it. If they would just take it a little slower. Thank you so much.
    Navi & Jose Cortez

  46. Mallory says:

Do I need to bring anything other than bags to pick up my dogs droppings to go to the dog park part of the beach? Do I need a leash, registration, etc? Just wondering so we can plan on bringing everything when we drive there next weekend. Thank you

    • Mike says:

Owners must bring pooper scooper device such as a bag etc and have them with them at all times.

A leash is required until they get through the snow fence at the bottom of the stairs. Once they have past the snow fence they can go off the leash.

The dog must be licensed if animal control stops them. Dangerous dogs such as pit bulls must be muzzled.

  47. Jason says:
