City of Muskegon New Website

August 23, 2009

Looking for contact information? You’ll find it located on the City of Muskegon Departments page.

This section is for those that would like to leave a comment or suggestion for the new site. If you would like to remain anonymous, simply enter anonymous for the name and anonymous@postman.org for the email.

We have been working very hard during the last six months on converting our old website to a new site based on the most popular Content Management System on the market today, Wordpress. This new CMS allows citizens to become more involved while at the same time automating costly processes and reducing the time spent on publishing content.

As this website grows, we’ll be correcting errors and omissions that can escape even the most detailed testing.

Should you find something missing, an error or have an idea for something new, please, by all means, leave a comment and let us know.

We look forward to hearing from you!

I am looking for the section for home sales.

  3. Herman Borgerding Jr says:

I was educated about the City of Muskegon’s Politics by my Father, Herman Borgerding Jr (Traffic Sup) for the city for many years. I my self was a OTR Truck Driver, and have left Muskegon out bound for many, many, cities across this Country. I couldn’t help but to compare my home town Muskegon to other cities. From 1975 until about 1997, this city was stagnate. Sometimes you have to leave this city and return to notice a change. Too many people have been here for years, and do not notice change, there fore there impression of Muskegon could remain the same. However… 1997 to 2009, What a change. The Planning Commission, amongst others, have turned this city “upside down”. The progress is outstanding. My hat is off to all. May I make a small suggestion? Maybe you could increase our “Pride” of Muskegon buy… bill board advertising, bumper stickers, ect? Some kind of a slogan that could change the attitude here in Muskegon? Thank you for your time. Sincerly, Herman Borgerding Home Town Pride

We used to get “The Channel,” the City of Muskegon newsletter, from the old site. Our archives go back to 1996. I’ve searched and searched, but I can’t find it on the new site. Is this newsletter no longer being published, and/or has it been replaced by something else? Thanks for any insight.

  5. Kevin says:

Please update the phone numbers listed on your website concerning water emergencies. I have an after hours water emergency, and the after hours phone number (231 739-3288) has been disconnected. COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE! The main numbers to the water department do not have updated information, so I am left with no way to get additional information. PLEASE FIX THIS IMMEDIATELY!

  6. Mike says:

    Kevin,

I apologize for the error, the correct phone number for an after hours water emergency for the City of Muskegon is 231-737-2680.

  12. Christopher says:

Paying parking tickets online. I wish there was a way to pay parking tickets online without an ADDED charge. I know you folks are using a third party system that is charging you a fee, but it would seem to make more sense to build an in-house payment system that would actually provide a discount (or at least a level fee for online payments). Recently the city’s finance directory has talked about the added costs involved in processing paper payments vs. electronic payments. It seems to me if electronic payments cost the city less, they should be encouraging those types of payments. (Not discouraging them by using third party processors that cause higher fees.)

    Thanks for your consideration.

  13. Erin says:

I heard that the vacant building fine can be waived now. Is that something that must be applied for, or is it automatic?

  14. Rev. Thomas Scott says:

We have discovered a broken door in our courtyard entrance that is unsafe and must be replace immediately: it is a security problem because we cannot lock it; it leaks our heat like a sieve; it is also full of mold in the insulated glass panes. We need to replace the door itself immediately, and we propose to do so with a door that is like the one we have a present. We are not going to change the appearance of the door and the framework around the door remains the same.

We are filing our work proposal with the Historic District Commission in time for the January meeting. Thank you for your understanding.

    St. Paul’s Episcopal Church

  15. Jason says:

  16. Susan Line says:

I have tried calling–nothing but a recording: Millard Street desperately needs some salt, sand and attention. Once again, Bluffton Bay got plowed, salted and attended to and Millard was driven past. It is so slippery that I dug sand out of my yard and spread it on the street in order to walk across the street. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE PUT US ON YOUR LIST OF EXISTING CITY STREETS OR ELSE PUT CONTAINERS OF SALT, SAND MIX ON OUR HILL AND STREET FOR US TO SPREAD.

P.S. When the inches of ice ever melt, we also need a truckload of pothole filler.

  17. Mike says:

    Susan,

You may call 724-4100 during the hours of 8:00 am to 4:30 pm with your questions about snow plowing Someone should be able to help you.

    Thank you.

I am a Persian Gulf veteran and a disabled veteran. I volunteer for a non-profit veterans organization. I am writing because I advocate for veterans in Muskegon in many ways. My mission right now is to recieve the HUD/VASH housing vouchers that I have requested from the VA through Battle Creek VAMC.
I have been told that the housing programs here do not want the problem of the assessment involved. All rules and guidelines are in place by the VA and I am willing to do the work for free, if you can assure the welcoming of this greatly needed benefit for our veterans. I can be reached @ 231-683-5147 or 231-737-8715 or the email address listed above. Thank you for your time.

  19. Mike says:

This is my second winter in Muskegon and I love it. I’m interested in more access to the lake for ice fishing access. Does the Jaycess(cottage grove) ramp charge a fee for parking in the winter? How about the GT dock parking? Thank you for keeping up a great city. Ill take here over Grand Rapids any day.

  20. Kelly DeFrench says:

Thank you very much for your comment inquiring about Launch Site Parking / fees in the City of Muskegon.

At this time we do not charge a fee for parking or access to Muskegon Lake during the winter season at any of our Public Access sites, Grand Trunk (GT), Cottage Grove, or Fisherman’s landing. The possibility of charging a small fee for parking / access during the winter season has been briefly discussed recently but it has not been brought forward by staff.

I am also an avid ice fisherman and couldn’t agree with you more about Winter Ice fishing opportunities in Muskegon.

Our parking lots at the above mentioned sites are being cleared of snow today in anticipation of a busy ice fishing weekend.

where to sign up for police ride along

  22. Mike says:

All ride-along requests for the City of Muskegon Police Department must be processed through the Patrol Captain. A ride-along request form must be obtained from the main desk of the Muskegon Police Department at 980 Jefferson Street, Muskegon, MI 49440. Ride along requests are not guaranteed to be approved. Factors considered on ride-along requests include background check information and what manpower level is available during specific shifts and other functions taking place at the same time. Anyone wanting to check the status of weather ride along requests are being considered at any given time may contact the main desk at (231) 724-6750 and ask to speak to the Patrol Captain.

I have always enjoyed reading the minutes to all of the meetings. This new website is not user friendly and I find it very difficult to find and read the minutes to meetings regarding the city I live in. Please find a new way to post the meetings or go back to the old website, it was much better than this one.

  27. Mike says:

    Teresa,

Thank you for your comment. I have sent you a direct email asking for more input on this subject, and what we can do to improve this for you.

    Thank you.

How should I dispose of my Christmas tree? Can I put it out at the curbside to be picked up as yard waste? Thank you.

  29. Mike says:

    Ruth,

You can put your Christmas tree out with your regular Garbage pickup, but only until 1/22/2010.

  38. Maleah says:

Hi, I just wanted to comment on how nice the new website looks, but it doesn’t seem to have much on events, attractions, or much of anything to do in town. I understand that this cite was created for the people of Muskegon, but if we want to advertise to vacationers or possible new residents, this type of section should be added as a main link/tab above. A list of shopping centers, restaurants, night attractions, Frauenthal events, museum openings, and a simple calendar of what is going on in our community would be a valuable adjustment to this professional looking website.

  39. Bob says:

Are you going to have your Irish Music festival this year. There is nothing on the website about 2010. Please send me contact informationa s I may want to be a part of it this year.

  42. Teresa Emory says:

One of the things you can do is make it easier to link to the meeting minutes. Right now you have to link to link to link and still you can’t get the meeting minutes to come up. It really is a difficult task to simply read the minutes.
