Muskegon is home to the original Raggedy Ann toy doll. The Non-Breakable Doll & Toy Company of Muskegon, located at the corner of Market Street and Terrace, about a half block east of the present downtown post office, manufactured the dolls starting in 1918. The company was selected by P.F. Volland, Chicago-based publisher of the Raggedy Ann Stories book, to produce the dolls. The first year Non-Breakable Toys produced 12,602 Raggedy Ann dolls and shipped them to Chicago via steamers. The wholesale cost was 68 cents per doll. Over the course of the seven-year contract, the Muskegon manufacturer shipped over 75,000 Raggedy Ann dolls.
